5 kidnappers arrested, 4 fishermen rescued in Ctg

Rapid Action Battalion-7 claimed to have arrested five kidnappers and rescued four abducted fishermen from a fishing trawler in Chattogram.

The arrestees were identified as: the gang’s ringleader Kamal (35), and associates Nur Nabi (26), Shameem (24), Anni (31) and Ferdous Majhi (35).

The gang was active in the Bay of Bengal’s Chattogram-Hatiya channel where they used to kidnap deep-sea fishermen for ransom from their families, said Lieutenant Colonel M Yousuf of Rab-7 while addressing a press conference today.

Rab personnel traced their location to the port city’s Akmal Ali Road area and arrested them on Tuesday night, the Rab official said, adding that firearms and sharp weapons were recovered from them.

Based on information retrieved from the arrestees, the law enforcers later rescued the fishermen from a trawler moored in the Karnaphuli river, Lt Col Yousuf also said.

A case was lodged in this connection, he added.
