The ruling BJP has announced its candidate for the presidency of India. The party has fielded Draupadi Murmu, a former governor of Jharkhand and tribal leader of Orissa.

According to the Election Commission, the presidential election will be held on July 18 and the votes will be counted on July 21. The new president will be sworn in on July 25.

BJP president JP Nadda said the BJP’s parliamentary committee met on Tuesday evening to finalize the presidential candidate. His name was announced at the end of the meeting. The meeting discussed the list of 20 possible candidates for the post of President. The party leaders decided to nominate one from East India, who is an aboriginal and a woman.

Murmu, 64, was a strong contender in the 2016 presidential election. But the government chose Ram Nath Kobind, the governor of Seba Bihar and a Dalit leader, for the presidency.

Murmu, the first woman governor of Jharkhand, started her political career as a councilor. From Orissa, he has twice been elected MLA for the BJP and Naveen Patnaik has also been a cabinet minister. He also served as the BJP president of Orissa’s Mayurbhanj district and represented the Orissa Legislative Assembly from Rairangpur.
