DC Studios Co-Head James Gunn Disappoints Fans With 2023 Comic-Con Update

With the news that Marvel Studios would be skipping their iconic showing in Hall H at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, all eyes have been on DC Studios for what they will bring to the table. DC Studios co-chair James Gunn gives fans a disappointing update on their presence this year.

Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con has always been a bastion of hope for comic fans with it serving as the hub for the biggest and brightest announcements of the year. That is, until 2023, as Lucasfilm, Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures, Netflix, and even HBO have all opted to sit out at SDCC. This left all eyes on DC Studios to make a splash. However, James Gunn has confirmed in the comments of a recent Instagram post that he’ll be skipping out on the convention, though will likely return in 2024.

Many fans expected the announcement of the Superman: Legacy casting to take place at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. However, it’s possible that James Gunn’s nonchalant confirmation of David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan As Lois Lane was a last-minute decision when it was decided DC Studios wouldn’t attend Comic-Con. While fans may be disappointed at the lack of news this year, one can only hope that both DC and Marvel Studios will come back with a bang in 2024.

Superman’s DC Universe Future

Superman: Legacy is a much-anticipated project, given that Clark Kent has been an integral part of the DC Universe for over 80 years, with various iterations and adaptations across different media. The movie promises to explore the character’s origins and his struggles to balance his dual identities as Clark Kent and Superman while fighting off villains and saving the world.

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
