James Gunn’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ Tracking For $130 Million Opening

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters soon, and according to Deadline, it’s projected to rake in $130 million during its opening weekend at the North American box office. However, this figure is lower than its predecessor, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which had a $146.5 million opening weekend in 2017.

Despite the lower projection, Deadline’s distribution sources are not worried, as they claim that the campaign for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has not reached its full potential yet. Marvel is known for its ability to create hype for its movies, and with a few more weeks left until Vol. 3 arrives in theaters, there is still plenty of time for marketing and promotion.

In terms of post-pandemic box office success, Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home currently holds the record for the highest domestic opening for a Marvel movie, with a staggering $260.1 million. Following closely behind is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which opened in the summer of 2022 with $187.4 million.

One confirmed aspect of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the return of James Gunn as writer and director. Gunn was originally set to direct the film after the success of the first two Guardians flicks, but was temporarily removed from the project due to controversial tweets that resurfaced from his past. However, after a public outcry from the Guardians cast and fans, Gunn was reinstated on the film. Vol. 3 is his last Marvel movie due to his commitments to DC Studios.

What to expect from the third Guadians movie

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 synopsis reads as follows: “Our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere, but it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life – a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone, Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji and Maria Bakalova.
