‘Justice League’ Director Zack Snyder On Possible ‘Blank Check’ Sequel

Zack Snyder’s recent Full Circle event served as a celebration of everything that the SnyderVerse was. When asked what film he’d direct with an unlimited budget, Snyder admitted that he liked the idea of returning for a “blank check” sequel.

Ever since Zack Snyder initially left the 2017 Justice League film due to the tragic passing of his daughter, DC Universe fans have been calling for the SnyderVerse to be restored and for Warner Bros. to let him finish his trilogy. During the recent Full Circle event meant to celebrate his time at the DCU, Snyder was asked what project he would direct if he had a blank check from the studio. Before he could answer, fans began chanting for his Justice League sequels, leading Snyder to admit “I guess that’s right… probably. I mean blank check, the scenario is pretty ludicrous, but I like it.”

While fans may have already begun to salivate at the idea of a SnyderVerse with an unlimited budget, Zack’s wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder was quick to point out that often times the budget isn’t the issue with the movies people really want to create. Instead, problems often arise about the actual content of the film:

“It’s not necessarily about money always.” she told the panel. “It’s sometimes about content that might be a little more hokey or controversial. We have some smaller projects that might be even harder to get made because everyone wants the big blockbuster movies. So sometimes the smaller project that don’t take as much money are harder to actually get made.”

The idea of a film being too controversial is a subject that hits entirely too close to home for Zack Snyder. The director has long wanted to adapt the Ayn Rand novel The Fountainhead into a feature film, though has put the project on hold due to the divided state of the country. In truth, if Warner Bros. had unlimited money to toss out, it would likely be incredibly easy to let Snyder throw together his Justice League films, even if they were at a loss. However, an adaptation of The Fountainhead would likely draw ire from at least one side of the political aisle no matter how its made. Even in a world with a blank check, not all films can or will be made. Sometimes though, it is nice to dream on what could be in another world.

The SnyderVerse era is over for now

The term “SnyderVerse” refers to the interconnected film universe that Zack Snyder created, which began with Man of Steel and continued with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Those plans have been scrapped in favor of an interconnected DC Universe consisting of film, television, animation and video game projects, with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm.

Despite its mixed reception, the SnyderVerse has a dedicated fanbase that appreciates Zack Snyder’s DC Universe vision. Fans have praised the SnyderVerse films for their darker tone and mature storytelling. They have also criticized Warner Bros. and DC’s interference with Snyder’s DCU plans, which they believe resulted in the lackluster final product of Justice League.

In 2021, Zack Snyder released his four-hour long Justice League cut on the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. His version of Justice League was well received by fans and critics alike, who praised its improvement over the original version of the movie, which was overseen by Joss Whedon. The release of the Snyder Cut has reignited interest in the SnyderVerse and sparked speculation about its future.
