Marvel Studios Knew ‘The Marvels’ Was In Trouble Before Release

The Marvels has been struggling at the box office since its debut in theaters. However, it seems as though Marvel Studios knew the film’s fate before it was even released.

This news comes from a new article written by The Hollywood Reporter. According to the report, both Disney and Marvel Studios were “well aware” of the troubles facing The Marvels before it was released. While there’s no further elaboration as to what the issues assessed were, it’s pointed out that Kevin Feige and his team want to step back and analyze their tentpole releases.

While it’s possible the issues stem from The Marvels itself, many reviews for the film give the project praise, despite it not being perfect. Rather, the troubles likely stem from damage to the Marvel Studios brand as a whole, with The Marvels releasing at a time when the company is under intense public pressure and the SAG-AFTRA strike preventing the stars from promoting the film.

The Marvels is also far from the only Disney project to flop this year. Outside of Marvel Studios, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Haunted Mansion both bombed hard at the box office. It’s surely possible the issue isn’t just the brand, but an internal issue with Disney’s release strategy, though only time will tell if that will improve.

The talent behind The Marvels

The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. The movie features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.

“She has a really calm vibe, too,” Iman Vellani said about DaCosta. “These movies are not easy to make at all. There’s like a million, bajillion little moving pieces. She and [executive producer] Mary [Livanos] did such a great job to keep morale high. Even if there were days where they wanted to rip people’s heads off, they would never show it and never put their stress on anyone else.”

In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
