Some Dhaka city residents today demanded cancelation of Dhaka Wasa’s attempts to raise water tariff.
They also demanded resignation of Wasa’s Managing Director Taqsem A Khan for his “failure to supply water of acceptable quality” at low cost.
They made the demands at a rally — under the banner of ‘Bangladesh Sadharon Nagorik Samaj’ — held in front of Wasa Bhaban at Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar.
Wasa is increasing water tariff repeatedly but has failed to improve water quality. Consumers are getting murky, stinky water, participants of the demo at the programme said.
They said Wasa has increased water tariff twice during the coronavirus pandemic, which is inhumane. The latest decision to hike the tariff by 20 percent is an imprudent decision, they said.
The demonstrators said city residents cannot bear the cost of system loss, misuse of water, corruption and asked Wasa to bring changes in high-ups, making its activities accountable and transparent.
