‘True Detective’ Creator Nic Pizzolatto Working On Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Script
Marvel’s Blade reboot is gaining momentum with Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of the critically-acclaimed HBO series True Detective.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nic Pizzolatto has been working on the Blade script for a few weeks now, building off of the foundation laid by Michael Starrbury, who was previously hired to write the screenplay for Marvel. Starrbury earned an Emmy nomination for his work on Ava DuVernay’s Netflix drama When They See Us.
Nic Pizzolatto’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe marks a True Detective reunion, as Blade actor Mahershala Ali previously starred in the third season of the acclaimed HBO series. Pizzolatto created the show, which is known for its dark, gritty tone and complex characters.
A beloved Marvel character, Blade was created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan in 1973. The half-human, half-vampire superhero first appeared in The Tomb of Dracula #10 in July of that year. He quickly gained popularity and was given his own comic book series. Blade was also the subject of a successful movie franchise in the late ’90s and early 2000s, starring Wesley Snipes as Brooks.
The talent behind Marvel’s Blade movie
Yann Demange, known for directing White Boy Rick and ’71, is at the helm of Marvel’s Blade movie, with a script penned by Michael Starrbury, who co-wrote Netflix’s When They See Us. Bassam Tariq was initially set to direct, but had to step down due to scheduling conflicts.
Actress Mia Goth was recently added to the cast of the upcoming Blade reboot. While Marvel has yet to confirm her role, rumors suggest that she may be playing Lilith, a powerful Marvel villain who has been a thorn in Blade’s side in the comics.
Blade is being produced by Marvel Studios veterans Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and Eric Hauserman Carroll, with Bassam Tariq receiving an executive producer credit despite leaving the director’s chair. The movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on September 6, 2024
