‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Director Teases Cut Spider-Man Connections

Venom: Let There Be Carnage astonished fans with a post-credits scene connecting Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. However, according to director Andy Serkis, earlier drafts of the film originally featured more of everyone’s favorite web-slinger.

Fans were ecastatic at the prospect of Hardy’s Venom making his way over to the Marvel Cienmatic Universe, with the tangled web of Spider-Man rights preventing him from interacting with the broader universe in his first film. Many of these fans were also left disappointed when Venom only appeared in a cameo at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home before returning to his own universe having never met Spider-Man. However, in a recent interview with GQ, Serkis revealed that fans were close to getting what they wanted:

“It was unsure as to the level of involvement that world would meet with our world,” Serkis told GQ. “There were drafts which had more, a little more, of the other. The unspoken. It was very, very carefully chosen.”

The director didn’t expand as to why the final film ended up with less interaction between the universes. While the future of Hardy’s Venom in the MCU has been left up in the air for now, his own series is set to continue with Venom 3 now in pre-production.

What to expect from the next Venom movie

Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal and Hutch Parker are producing Venom 3. The four were also involved with the first two Venom movies, which were directed by Ruben Fleischer and Andy Serkis. Kelly Marcel is making her directorial debut with the third installment.

Venom and its follow-up Venom: Let There Be Carnage earned a combined $1.36 billion at the worldwide box office. Following their release, Tom Hardy reprised his role as the anti-hero for the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, setting up the long-awaited arrival of the Symbiote suit for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.
