‘Watchmen’ Writer Damon Lindelof Was Asked To Leave ‘Star Wars’ Project
The announcement that Watchmen writer Damon Lindelof would helm a Star Wars project was an exciting prospect for many fans. However, following the announcement of three new films during the Star Wars Celebration, none of which had Lindelof attached, the writer explains that he was asked to leave his project.
This year’s Star Wars Celebration saw the announcement of heaps of new media from across the Star Wars canon. Fans saw announcements of a film directed by Dave Filoni, which will wrap up the Mandoverse shows currently streaming on Disney Plus, as well as a movie about the first ever Jedi, directed by James Mangold. Despite dozens of names now being attached to Star Wars projects across screens big and small, Lindelof’s name was nowhere to be found. Lindelof explained his absence from these announcements during a recent interview:
“I was in more than talks to join the Star Wars universe,” Lindelof told Esquire. “I joined the Star Wars universe and was asked to leave.”
When asked to leave, most people would take that as a sign to pack their bags and never look back. It seems as though Damon Lindelof has a different mentality, however. Despite his project being axed, he still holds hope of returning to the galaxy far, far away:
“Will I get back in line outside the club and try to get back in again?” Lindelof asks himself during the interview. “Absolutely…If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again, or again again try, as Yoda would say.”
Not much was known about Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars project other than the fact that he was attached to it. Some recent rumors such as those by insider CanWeGetSomeToast suggest that the film would have seen an Elderly Rey training two young Jedi. While a new film focused on Rey was announced to be in production, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct the project. It’s unclear how much inspiration Obaid-Chinoy’s film will take from Lindelof’s concept or if it will serve as a total departure from everything fans expect.

The announcement of these three new Star Wars movies marks an exciting time for fans of the franchise. With each movie being directed by a different filmmaker, there is sure to be a unique perspective and style brought to each project.
